Lunar New Year is a tradition that celebrates family and thanksgiving. Resplendent with legends and rituals, the Lunar New Year is derived from ancient Chinese astrology and determined by the cycle of the moon. Each year in the 12-year cycle is represented by an animal with distinct personality traits. Lunar New Year 4707 is the year of the Ox. A symbol of strength, dependability, logic, and hard-work, the ox is the second animal in the 12-year cycle. On the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, the Lantern Festival takes place with parades, lantern displays and family gatherings. This year's Firecracker Ceremony will kick-off the festivities in Chinatown on Monday, January 26th at Sara D. Roosevelt Park in Manhattan and the annual Lunar New Year Parade will take place on Sunday. February 1st throughout Chinatown.
